INSULATED GLASS IS ALSO KNOWN AS DOUBLE PANE GLASS or THERMO-PANE GLASS.
The construction of an insulated unit is designed to help control energy transfer from outside to inside or vice versa. Insulated Glass is made with (2) panels of glass with an aluminum spacer running along its interior edges. The aluminum spacer is filled with desiccant to absorb any residual moisture inside the IG unit after it has been sealed with urethane.
Insulated Glass replacement is required when one of two things happens.
- the unit breaks
- the units seal breaks
When the seal breaks the unit will begin to fill up with condensation. This condensation will cause streaking and will eventually stain the glass to the point that you will no longer be able to see through it. You cannot fix the unit. Once the seal breaks the unit must be replaced. IG unit seals are warrantied for 8 years. They generally last 10-12.
