3/8" - 1/2" glass is the standard for projects like this. As a rule of thumb, the less weight the better. The glass can be tempered or polished with polished edges. Star-fire Glass available.
These panels are usually anchored into the staircase with stand-offs. A hand railing can be installed into the glass although it is not required.
